owls and freeways

lately as i’ve been falling asleep, or sometimes when i wake up in the middle of the night i hear an owl outside my window. it’s kind of a neat sounds to hear late at night. i didn’t really know that you’d find owls in the city. i kind of always thought they’d only be out in the country. it’s got me thinking a bit about the sounds we hear where we live. this morning i was waiting for the bus thinking about how quiet it was. it was very different from my old apartment next to the freeway, a constant white noise in the background that i had just become accustomed to and filtered out. then i realized that i was still filtering it out. the freeway is audible from my bus stop and when you listen in, it’s really damn loud. the freeway is about eight blocks from there. i felt kind of dissapointed.
i get on these kicks every now and again where i get really interested in the sounds around me. i think part of that is because so often i have no idea what sounds are around me. i’m addicted to music and my headphones. recently though, i’ve come up against a sort of wall that i don’t know what to do about. my problem is that i have too much music and frequently have a hard time settling on something to listen to. (i know, i know, cry me a river, right?) seriously though, for someone who listens to music all the damn time, this is a problem. but one of the good sides is that i’m spending a little more time listening ot the sounds around me.
