a lesson in glycemic indexes

just went to a birthday party for a friend of mine. good guy, the theme was beer due to the fact that he got a deluxe beer kit for his b-day. i’m going to help him make his first batch tomorrow. woot.

anyway, i ended up getting a lecture (sort of) from this guy there named john. not sure how we really got onto it. i don’t think he meant to be so lectury. he’s just one of those kinds of guys and it was something that he was really excited about.

so, here is some of what i’ve been told. i don’t know if it’s true but i will be looking into it.

1. eggs = good. that they’re bad for you is a myth, get the free range ones though cuz the other kinds have an imbalance of omege 3 vs omega 6.

2. you can control a lot with knowledge of the glycemic index. if you balance food that are high on the list with foods low on the list, you can control your weight easily. andrew weil has this to say, “Although youĂll see glycemic index rankings written as whole numbers, they actually are percentages, advertisement so if the GI of a food is 71, treat this as 71% when you multiply it by the grams of carbohydrate in a serving. Foods with a low glycemic load rank from one to 10; those with medium load range from 11-19 and those with high glycemic load rank at 20 or above.”

3. the following are apparently bad for you, or perhaps it’s better to say that they’re not good: dried fruit, any juice from concentrate (including my favorite; apple juice), white rice, corn (in processed form, fresh is fine) and white flour.

ok, well thats as much as i can remember from his little talk. oh yeah and to look up a book called the sugar solution.
