2 things: one short and one long

  1. i know it’s tuesday but it sure feels like a monday. i woke up and ran out the door, forgetting my checkbook that i needed for a fund raiser that becky and i are going to later today. i stumbled through the bus ride and walk to work and right into the kitchen to make coffee. the new coffee maker has a crappy spigot for hot water (i make one cup at a time in a drip basket that fits on the cup) and i burn my hand every other day. today i not only burned my hand but also have a nice series of coffee stains across the front of my pants that looks like castoff for those of you csi fans out there. not a great way to start the day.

  2. when i was younger i never really cared much for history. i think i just never made the connection to myself. not to say that it’s not important if it doesn’t have anything to do with me, but there were just more pressing things. over the last year or so though i’ve started getting interested in it. i think what got me started is a program on tpt that becky and i watched, well two actually. one was about swede hollow and the other was about the rondo neighborhood, two old neighborhoods near mine with an interesting history.

last week i saw my grandparents on my mom’s side of the family and we ended up talking family history and looking at old pictures. when i bought my first house it just happened to be about six blocks from where my grandpa grew up. so he has a ton of stories of the neighborhood in the 30s. but i also started to get more stories about my grandma’s childhood neighborhood which is not far away. i learned that there are a large number of fire chiefs in my family for some reason.

over the weekend i saw my grandma on my dad’s side while my dad was in town and started to get some of the history from that side of the family. part of our line come from the MacKay clan of the northernmost part of scotland. i guess i’m even in a book somewhere that was written about it. but more recently, that part of the family is from harmony, mn where i learned that some of my relatives discovered the niagra caves down there. they were chasing a pig through a field and fell right in, or so i’m told anyway.

so i’m thinking about getting involved in genealogy. it’s interesting to take note of all the family stories and such. i figure maybe i can capture them and start saving some of these things digitally. who knows, maybe it’ll pass and i’ll move on to something else but for now it’s been really interesting. i’m working with a program called lifelines that is also pretty nerdy. so i can combine a new interest in family history with an old interest in all things nerdy.
