another weekend surprise – this one better than a bee sting

i had another weekend surprise, this one better than a bee sting (which, by the way, is fine now though a little itchy for some reason). i finally made it to the store to buy some new running shoes. now my old ones were more than a year old but i hadn’t used them enough (sigh it was really hard to get into the running habit again. . . though i am doing quite well this time and have over a month of it behind me now). i felt conflicted because it didn’t feel like they were all that used but i’ve also heard from my running friends that the bounce goes out of running shoes after a year no matter the use and you really should get new ones. this goes against my rule of thumb that shoes should last at least four years but i thought, well i’ll give it a try.
i bought a pair of new balances because i’ve always liked their shoes and they at least try to not use foreign sweatshop labor to build their shoes. i meant to remember which model i picked up so i could mention it specifically but i forgot and really it probably doesn’t matter.
here’s the thing. it really does make a difference. my old shoes that i loved (montrails, good shoes) had gotten worn out and i hadn’t noticed because it happened slowly. but i put on these new shoes and they made me realized how ploddingly i was forced to run in the old ones. no wonder my legs ached. these new shoes make me feel like a gazelle bounding along under open skies. (ok, sorry for that) still, they’re awesome shoes and running feels much better, now i find that instead of the pain being in my legs, it’s all back to my lungs trying to keep up. as it should be.
i am surprised by this every time i buy a pair of new running shoes. you’d think i’d learn.
