Last night as I was driving home through a bit of snow I happened across an amazing story on an NPR program called The Story. Monday's program was about Jo Berry and Patrick Magee. Jo Berry's father was killed in an IRA bombing. Patrick Magee was the member of the IRA who planted the bomb. If this had been an American TV show you could expect it to be an over the top showing of emotion, with each scene tweaked and edited just so, the participants manipulated into a state that would maximize viewers.
But it wasn't that. No, here is where the amazing part comes in. This was a clear and rational discussion between people that had been enemies and have found a way to move forward. They have had a relationship now for years and have focused on listening to each other and understanding. This has led to a real sense of trust and even friendship.
Amazing. I am inspired. This is the kind of thing our world needs. I'm especially aware of this as I watch the state of affairs in the politics in my country and see them growing more and more polarized each day. I would love to see and hear more people like Jo and Patrick. I will try to be like Jo and Patrick. And I'll tell people about them. It's not a perfect world, and it's not a perfect story but I think it shows well how we can turn things around. Change is possible.

I didn't hear that episode, but that's one of the best programs on the air. People should listen in.
