here’s a shot of ben at the pub. i’m pretty happy with how it turned out. with my holga and using film, it’s a bit a of a crap shoot for me. . . i just haven’t gotten the “feel” for it yet. . . so it’s a bit of guess work.

1. irish fair. went to st paul’s irish fair this weekend. i think my mother’s favorite part was the shirt that said, “st paul was in the bible, minneapolis was not.” heh. oh you st paul catholics. . . . got a wicked sun burn but it was fun to be outside (perfect, absolutely perfect, day) and listening to irish music. we watched the dancers for a bit. ate some good food (though what i had wasn’t irish). we got to watch a bit of hurling, which i’d heard was getting big in the twin cities but hadn’t had the chance to see it yet. in a way it is sort of like lacross but with hard bats instead of sticks and nets. it’s fun being irish (and now i know welsch too! plus i admit that after this weekends research, looking more english than i thought).

2. excited about camping. yesterday i started looking to see if things were going to fit in my new pack. i think i’m going to make it. i put up my tent and re-sealed the seams of the rain fly. i flushed the carbon out of my new water filter. now i’m starting to feel excited. we’ve been planning the trip since like february so it had begun to feel a bit unreal. now it feels real again. when i set up the tent under the blue blue sky, i remembered how it feels to be up there on the lakes, feeling the wind blowing in off the water. oooh, i can’t wait!

1. you know, you really can get more by being nice. this morning i had a cholesterol test that i had to go in for. you have to fast for that so i wanted to do it as early as possible so i went in early and found out that the lab didn’t open for 40 minutes. i was nice about it and didn’t complain because i knew it was my own fault for coming early. no problem, i had planned ahead, i brought a good book. but what do you know, my nice behavior paid off and the lady came out to get me in under five minutes.

now i don’t like needles much. i’ve only given blood once. . . though i know i should go back and do plan on it but . . . the woman who drew blood was really nice and worked diligently to avoid any pain. it’s kind of a hard thing to do because i have small veins or veins that hide or something. anyway, i told her about a bad experience i had once and she told me a story about a woman that feinted at the site of the needle. i said that the good thing about having a bad experience is that everything else seems fine then. she was very nice but did say out loud that she hoped that the whole day wouldn’t be like this. so as i was leaving i told her i hoped i had been the most difficult part of her day.

i like to think that i brightened her day just a bit.

2. i’ve been working on scanning in all my old rolls of black and white photos. i came across some this weekend (that porch pic is one of them) and had some fun scanning them in. some of them however i have no memory of taking. they are taken in what appears to be a chemistry lab. there are bottles of acid and something cooking over a bunsen burner. how odd.

1. i’m relatively certain i’ve never been called a manly man in anything but jest. so, i may not go about cutting down trees and killing things or jacking up cars or what have you. and yes, i like a bath with some salts in it now and again. however, i can’t believe some of these dandies i see at the gym. i mean, the work out is one thing, but then the process to get yourself ready for work takes just as long for these guys. after i work out (no more than 30 minutes usually) i take a quick shower, run a comb through my hair (a recent addition even) and get dressed. these guys not only shave, using after shave and cologne but also seem to have a before shave gel separate from shaving gel. they brush. they floss. they use hair driers and brushes. seriously.

2. yesterday i went ice fishing with my sister’s boyfriend. it was my first trip. he was kind enough to buy me a pole and i picked up the tab on the minnows. we cheated a bit by towing the ice house out using a four wheeler but we did have a hand auger so that counts for something. i caught five fish which is better than i usually do and i can’t pretend there’s really a lot of talent to it but it was fun. it was a beautiful day out, i’d say forty and sunny. i took some photos with my holga so we’ll see if they come out. anyway, in my book, ice fishing is just plain fun. we threw everything back this time but i think next time we’ll have ourselves a nice little fish fry. thanks, matt.

2. last night becky and i watched kiss kiss bang bang. i very much liked it. basically it’s a dective-y film noir kind of movie. i’ve always loved those kinds of stories. but it also has the rambling fast paced narration of Robert Downey Jr. and the special kind of sarcasm that only Val Kilmer can do. Plus there are a number of grammar jokes if you pay attention.

and sometimes that thinking would be right. heh. i was just listening to music and it faded out and i thought it was crashing again but no, just politely fading the music out for an incoming call. heh.

2. also, because i haven’t said it here in a while. i love coffee.
